Ford Ranger towing capacity, and what it really leaves you

Most Rangers are rated to tow 3,500 kg braked. The catch is the combination limit: towing the full 3,500 kg leaves an XLT V6 about 649 kg for everything else in the ute, before accessories.

Quick answer

The Ford Ranger XLT V6 is rated to tow 3,500 kg braked with a 350 kg tow ball rating, a 3,350 kg GVM and a 6,400 kg GCM. Towing the full 3,500 kg leaves about 649 kg above kerb weight for people, gear and accessories. The Ranger Raptor is rated lower: 2,500 kg braked.

A worked example

An XLT V6 weighs 2,251 kg at the kerb. Hitch a 3,500 kg caravan and the GCM of 6,400 kg leaves 2,900 kg for the ute: 649 kg above kerb weight. Two adults, the towbar and tongue, a fridge, recovery gear and camping kit eat into that quickly. A canopy or tray can take you over on its own.

Drop the caravan to 3,000 kg and the GCM leaves 1,149 kg above kerb, but now the GVM (3,350 kg, including the 300 kg ball weight) caps the ute's load at 799 kg. That is why the calculator checks all four limits.

Can it tow it?

Vehicle figures as tabulated by Loadmate for the variant shown, snapshot read 3 October 2026. Check your own compliance plate and handbook: limits differ by variant, year and fitted accessories. Measure the fully loaded setup and check your own ratings. This calculator does not check axle limits, brakes, stability or every approval condition.

The four limits, applied to the Ranger

Every tow vehicle has four limits, and the Ranger is no exception. The braked towing capacity limits the trailer's loaded weight. The tow ball rating limits the weight the trailer puts on the towbar. The GVM limits the loaded ute, including people, gear, accessories and the tow ball weight. The GCM limits the ute and trailer together. A setup can be under the headline towing capacity and still be illegal because it is over GVM or GCM, which is exactly what the worked example above shows. Our towing capacity calculator checks all four at once.

Accessories eat payload

Most Rangers that tow caravans are heavily accessorised: a bull bar, a winch, side steps, a canopy or tray, roof racks, drawers, a second battery, a fridge, recovery gear and water. Each item is light on its own, but together they can add several hundred kilograms before anyone gets in. Weigh the ute with its accessories, empty of people and gear, at a public weighbridge, and you will know exactly how much payload is left for the trip.

Tow ball weight

A common guide is a tow ball weight of around 10 per cent of the loaded caravan's weight, so a 3,000 kg van might put about 300 kg on the ball. That weight counts against the Ranger's GVM and its 350 kg tow ball rating. Too little ball weight can make a caravan unstable; too much overloads the rear axle and lightens the front, which affects steering and braking. Measure it with a tow ball scale with the van loaded for travel.

Weight distribution hitches

A weight distribution hitch uses spring bars to spread some of the tow ball weight back onto the Ranger's front axle and the caravan's axles, levelling the combination. It can improve steering and braking feel with a heavy van. Check the vehicle maker's handbook and the towbar maker's advice first, because some vehicles and towbars have specific rules on their use.

Raptor and other variants

The Ranger Raptor is rated to tow less than the standard Ranger, 2,500 kg braked, because of its suspension and focus on off-road driving. Other variants, engines and body styles have their own GVM, GCM and payload figures, so check the compliance plate, the owner's handbook and the specifications for your exact vehicle. Figures change between model years, too.

Upgrades

Some owners fit a GVM upgrade to increase the legal loaded weight of the ute. An upgrade must be engineered, certified and registered, and it does not usually increase the GCM, so it may not help when towing at the full rating. Read our guide to GVM and GCM before spending money on one.

Towing safely

Drive with more space ahead than usual, brake earlier, and slow down on descents and in crosswinds. Check tyre pressures on the ute and the van before each trip, set the brake controller gain with the van loaded, and carry towing mirrors that meet the rules. Stop regularly to check the coupling, chains, lights and tyres.

Choosing a caravan for a Ranger

Work backwards from the ute's payload. Weigh the Ranger as you would normally travel, with accessories, people, fuel and gear, and subtract that from its GVM to find how much tow ball weight it can still carry. Then look at the GCM to see how heavy the loaded caravan can be. Many owners find a caravan of around 2,500 to 3,000 kg loaded suits a well-equipped Ranger better than a 3,500 kg van, because it leaves room for gear in the ute and keeps the combination within all four limits. Remember that a caravan's advertised tare weight is empty; water, gas, food and gear add a lot.

Comparing the Ranger with its rivals

Most dual-cab utes sold in Australia, including the Ranger's main rivals, are rated to tow 3,500 kg braked, so the headline figure rarely separates them. The differences that matter are GVM, GCM, payload, tow ball rating and how much the ute weighs once accessorised. Two utes with the same towing capacity can leave very different payloads at full towing weight. Our towing capacity guide compares popular tow vehicles on the figure most people miss: how much the vehicle can carry while towing its full rated trailer.

Towing with the Ranger PHEV

The Ranger's plug-in hybrid version is also rated to tow 3,500 kg braked, but heavier batteries reduce payload, and towing a heavy van uses much more energy, so the electric-only range drops quickly. Check the specifications for the variant you are considering and plan charging and fuel stops accordingly.

Tyres and suspension

Tyres must be rated for the load and the speed, and inflated to the pressures the vehicle maker gives for towing and heavy loads, which are often higher than everyday pressures. Aftermarket suspension can change ride height and handling but does not increase the legal GVM unless it is part of a certified upgrade. If you lift the ute, check the effect on the towbar height and the caravan's level.

A checklist before towing with a Ranger

  1. Confirm the trailer's loaded weight is under 3,500 kg (2,500 kg for a Raptor).
  2. Measure the tow ball weight and keep it under 350 kg and the towbar's rating.
  3. Weigh the loaded ute and keep it under GVM.
  4. Add ute and trailer together and keep them under GCM.
  5. Set the electric brake controller gain with the van loaded.
  6. Fit towing mirrors if the van is wider than the ute.
  7. Check lights, chains, coupling, breakaway and tyre pressures.

Where these figures come from

The figures on this page come from published manufacturer specifications compiled by loadmate.io, read on 3 October 2026. Specifications change between model years and variants, and optional equipment changes kerb weight. Always confirm with your vehicle's compliance plate and owner's handbook.

Why towing heavy is hard on payload

Utes are rated to tow 3,500 kg partly because buyers expect it, but the GCM sets the real limit. The GCM is the total the ute and trailer may weigh together, and on many dual-cab utes it is less than the ute's GVM plus 3,500 kg. So the heavier the trailer, the less the ute itself may weigh. At the full 3,500 kg, the space left for people, gear and accessories shrinks to a few hundred kilograms, as the worked example shows. Drop the trailer weight, and the payload returns, until the GVM becomes the limit instead. The sweet spot for many owners is a trailer a few hundred kilograms below the maximum.

Fuel use when towing

Towing a heavy caravan can increase fuel use substantially compared with driving the ute empty, depending on the van's weight, its frontal area, the speed and the terrain. Plan fuel stops more often on long stretches, and carry extra fuel safely only within the payload you have left. Driving a little slower on highways often saves a surprising amount of fuel when towing.

Driving tips for Ranger owners new to towing

  1. Practise reversing and turning in an empty car park before the first trip.
  2. Use the trailer sway control and the electric brake controller's override if the van starts to sway, and ease off the accelerator rather than braking hard.
  3. Use a lower gear on long descents so the brakes do not overheat.
  4. Allow far more distance to overtake, and only overtake when the road is clear well ahead.
  5. Watch for low branches, fuel station canopies and caravan park entrances with the extra height and width of the van.

Paperwork and inspections

Carry the van's registration papers, and know its tare, ATM and tow ball weight. In some states, inspectors run roadside checks on caravans and tow vehicles, especially on popular holiday routes, and can weigh rigs. A weighbridge ticket from before the trip is good evidence that you checked.

Common Ranger towing setups

Weekend boat or box trailer. A light trailer well under 2,000 kg loaded leaves plenty of GVM and GCM headroom. A standard heavy-duty towbar, 7-pin flat plug and, for heavier boats, an electric brake controller cover most needs.

Camper trailer. A loaded camper of around 1,500 to 2,000 kg suits the Ranger well. Check the camper's tow ball weight, which can be high on models with a front toolbox and water tanks, and consider an off-road hitch for rough tracks.

Mid-size caravan. A loaded van of 2,500 to 3,000 kg is common. Weigh the setup to confirm the ute stays under GVM with the ball weight, and set up the brake controller and towing mirrors properly.

Large caravan at the maximum. A van close to 3,500 kg leaves very little payload in the ute. Owners in this category often travel with a lightly loaded ute, carry water in the van only if its ATM allows, and weigh carefully before every long trip.

Where to weigh in your area

Public weighbridges are found at many transfer stations, grain receival sites, quarries and some service stations. Mobile caravan weighing services also visit many towns. Call ahead to check opening hours and that they will weigh a car and caravan.

Frequently overlooked weights

Several items that are easy to forget add up quickly in a touring Ranger: the towbar and tongue themselves, a full fuel tank and any jerry cans, a second battery and its cabling, drawers and a fridge slide, a full fridge, recovery boards and a winch, a roof tent and its rack, and water stored in the ute rather than the van. Each can weigh tens of kilograms. Add them up honestly, or better, weigh the ute fully packed, before the first big trip. Owners are often surprised to find a well-equipped Ranger is already close to its GVM before the caravan's tow ball weight is added.

Our summary

The Ranger is a capable tow vehicle with a 3,500 kg braked rating on most variants, but the legal limit you can actually tow depends on how heavily the ute itself is loaded. Weigh the ute and van together, keep the four limits in view, and choose a caravan that leaves room for the gear you travel with. The Ranger Raptor tows less, at 2,500 kg braked.

Ranger tow ball rating and towbars

The Ranger's 350 kg tow ball rating applies with a towbar rated to match. Aftermarket towbars for the Ranger come with their own ratings, and the lower of the towbar's and the vehicle's ratings is the legal limit. Check the plate on your towbar, especially on a second-hand Ranger, where an older or lighter bar may have been fitted. A heavy-duty towbar rated to 3,500 kg and 350 kg is the usual choice for caravan owners, fitted with a vehicle-specific wiring harness and coding so the Ranger's trailer sway control works.

Where to go next

Use the towing capacity calculator with your Ranger's own figures, read GVM and GCM explained for the limits, and see electric brake controllers and towbar installation cost for the gear you need to tow a caravan legally and safely with a Ranger.
